Introduction
In June and July 2026, Kotte partnered with Räddningsmissionen and Tynnereds Mammor, a group of mothers in the neighborhood of Tynnered, Gothenburg, to design a project together. Tynnereds Mammor are a self-organized group who gather multiple times each week over the summer, bringing together families, food and play in their local parks. We came together with a simple question: What could we design and build that would support the group’s ongoing activities? Over a series of five gatherings in Opalparken, we conceived and created a mobile fika-and-play station.
We started by meeting with the group’s organizers to learn about what they do together and their needs. Next, we attended one of their gatherings and brought along materials to make a collaborative flag with children and adults. While we worked, we could ask questions and get to know the context better.
Based on our learnings, Kotte members, led by Katja Mock, designed a mobile station that can be used to transport supplies and as a fika or food prep surface. Now it was time for hands-on work.
Kotte members prepared materials off-site. At our next workshop, it was time to paint.
It was important that the process be not only inclusive, but also fun! A swing at the park’s playground helped with splatter-painting the wooden parts. Everyone got involved.
Our next session was an on-site build. Children and mothers participated, with many getting to use an electric screwdriver for the first time!
Finally, the station was complete! At our last session, we presented the station to the community and shared ice cream. We hope it helps facilitate many more wonderful gatherings to come.
The station uses a heavy-duty transport wagon as a base and has three compartments to hold modular plastic Euro-boxes so the users can decide on a given day which of their boxes of materials to load up. The top surface features a stainless surface for food prep, and there are also functional hooks on one side to hang tools or a trash bag during an event. The sides and top showcase the children’s splatter painting and our collaborative flag.
